If you’re hearing is a bit muffled or you’re feeling a little bit of vertigo, you may have excess ear wax that’s built up in your ear canal that needs to be removed. The safest way to remove ear wax is to have a professional healthcare provider do it for you. Trying to remove earwax yourself can be risky, you may run the risk of damaging your inner ear if you use a bobby pin or Q-Tip. However, some ear wax removal methods can easily and safely be performed at home.
There are three different methods used for ear wax removal
Ear Wax Drops
Ear wax drops are used to soften, loosen, and dissolve ear wax. Ear wax removal kits which include ear wax drops can be purchased from your local pharmacy, including Hodgson Pharmacy in South London.
Ear Syringing (Irrigation)
Ear irrigation is performed by a healthcare professional, and the procedure is simple. A syringe filled with warm water gently sprays water at the sides of the ear canal to get behind the excess earwax and essentially flush out the ear wax build-up.
Micro-Suction Ear Wax Removal
Microsuction ear wax removal also needs to be performed by a healthcare provider. This method is one of the safest and most effective to remove earwax without causing any pain. A sterile suction probe connected to a gentle suction machine is then used to vacuum out ear wax. Unlike regular ear irrigation or syringing, micro-suction is a “dry” procedure that significantly reduces the risk of causing damage to the eardrum.
If you are struggling with muffled hearing or constant itching in your ears, you can benefit from ear micro-suction. The procedure does not take more than 30 minutes and is generally better tolerated without any side effects.
The procedure costs £50 for one ear and £80 for both ears.
